In addition to price, there are several other factors that impede access to antiretroviral drugs. One of these is the challenge of carrying out research trials in resource-poor settings, which is critical in order to assess and address the specific challenges faced by these communities.

In order to overcome this problem, ViiV Healthcare has been supporting international HIV collaborative research trials in many regions. The trials are sponsored by external organisations, such as the World Health Organisation (WHO), and commonly focus on issues such as transmission prevention, treatment strategies and co-infection. ViiV Healthcare provides much-needed financial and scientific support for these trials, along with the crucial donation of antiretrovirals.
